I was in Kyoto for New Year's, and I surprisingly got to see both extremes of spirituality and materialism. I was surprised to see the latter in Kyoto. Eating breakfast in Kyoto station on New Year's morning streams of young to not so young girls were carrying 2, 3, 4 and even FIVE of these "happy bags" with them all from name brand shops. It was literally making me sick.

In contrast, on New Year's Eve I was at Chion-in witnessing a spectacular ringing in of the New Year by 15 monks and the largest bell in Japan.
